Heinrich, Luján, Leger Fernández Welcome $3.2 Million to Support Business and Job Growth in New Mexico

WASHINGTON — U.S. Senators Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) and Ben Ray Luján (D-N.M.), and U.S. Representative Teresa Leger Fernández (D-N.M.) welcomed $3.2 million from the U.S. Department of Commerce to support business and job growth in New Mexico.

Funded by the Economic Development Administration (EDA), this investment will support the Village of Jemez Springs to improve wastewater infrastructure and San Miguel County to support wood production and processing.

“Investing in the success of Northern New Mexico small businesses is crucial to the continuing economic recovery from the Hermit’s Peak-Calf Canyon and Cerro Pelado Fires,” said Heinrich. “I am committed to delivering federal support to New Mexicans to respond to both immediate emergency needs during fires and floods, and throughout the long recovery work that follows.”

“Thanks to these investments that I was proud to support, the Village of Jemez Springs will receive funding needed to improve wastewater infrastructure for local businesses while creating more jobs in the process. San Miguel County will also receive $1 million to support wood production and processing at the SMC Wood Park ensuring the local communities have access to this sustainable resource. These investments are a win for New Mexico and I look forward to seeing how these investments help support local economic opportunities,” said Luján.

“Change happens when every level of government works together. That’s why my congressional colleagues and I voted to fund these grants for Jemez Springs and San Miguel County. These funds will improve water infrastructure, support local businesses, and create good-paying jobs,” said Leger Fernández.  “I am happy our beloved communities continue to benefit from the Biden-Harris Administration’s commitment to local economies.”

Specifically, the two EDA grants will invest:

  • $2.2 million for the Village of Jemez Springs to improve wastewater infrastructure, which will support local businesses. The project will be matched with $561,295 in local funds and is expected to create and retain nearly 240 jobs, according to grantee estimates.
  • $1 million for San Miguel County to support wood production and processing at the SMC Wood Park. The project will be matched with $100,000 in local funds.
