Luján Statement on Facebook Oversight Board Decision Upholding Trump Suspension
Silver City, N.M. – U.S. Senator Ben Ray Luján (D-N.M.), Chair of the Senate Commerce Subcommittee on Communications, Media, and Broadband, issued the following statement after the Facebook Oversight Board upheld the platform’s suspension on former President Donald Trump:
“President Trump used social media, including Facebook, to attack the legitimacy of the 2020 presidential election. He used it to incite an angry mob to storm the U.S. Capitol, threaten lawmakers, and undermine the democratic process,” said Luján. “Today’s decision by Facebook’s oversight board makes it once again clear that Facebook must do more to address misinformation and hate speech on its platform. As Chair of the Commerce Subcommittee on Communications, I will continue to hold Facebook and other social media companies accountable and demand that they join in Congress’ efforts to battle the spread of misinformation, hate speech, and other dangerous content.”
