Luján Applauds Construction of Cell Towers in Catron County

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Ben Ray Luján (D-N.M.) joined local leaders in applauding the completion of two temporary cell towers in Catron County that will better connect residents, first responders, and travelers to reliable phone service in the communities of Datil, Luna, and Reserve, New Mexico. The region previously had little to no service for residents with the recent generations of smartphone technology. 

Senator Luján’s office worked directly with the wireless provider, Verizon, and the local power company, Navopache Electric Cooperative, to ensure that these communities have access to reliable and resilient wireless networks.

“In the 21^st century, reliable cell service is nothing short of essential. But in too many rural and Tribal communities, spotty wireless service continues to be a hindrance. New Mexicans rely on their phones in emergencies and everyday life, including to operate businesses and connect to family and neighbors. I was proud to work with local officials to push for the completion of two temporary cell towers in Catron County which will better connect residents and travelers to reliable service after years of reduced connectivity,” said Luján, Chair of the Commerce Subcommittee on Communications, Media, and Broadband.  “This is welcome news, and I’ll continue fighting for robust telecom investment to connect all New Mexicans to reliable service.” 

“We are excited to have improved cell phone service in our community,” said Hilda D. Kellar, Mayor of Reserve. “It’s been a long time coming and we appreciate the efforts of everyone involved that helped to make this happen.” 

“It is always reassuring to know that, as a Commissioner, I can reach out to other elected officials, and we all work together to accomplish a goal that benefits Catron County,” said Anita Hand, Catron County Commissioner District 1. “The new cell towers will, not only benefit our constituents, but more importantly will assure that our law enforcement, Fire and EMS personnel have that vital communication with a stronger, more reliable cell signal.”
