Luján Statement on Petition Urging FCC to Collect New Data on the Diversity of Media Content Owners

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Ben Ray Luján (D-N.M.) issued the following statement following FUSE media’s petition to the Federal Communications Commission urging the Commission to establish a new, annual report regarding the diversity of content vendors used by regulatees in broadcast, cable, broadband and satellite. FUSE, LLC is an independent, Latino-owned entertainment company dedicated to empowering young, multicultural voices, and is led by the coalition that included Common Cause, the National Hispanic Media Coalition, Public Knowledge, and the United Church of Christ Media Justice Ministry. 

“Increasing diversity in media ownership and media content not only ensures that historically marginalized communities have a voice in our national discussion, it also benefits market competition and stimulates economic growth by uplifting these communities,” said Senator Luján, Chairman of the Subcommittee on Communications, Media, and Broadband. “I’m encouraged by this petition. Its call for the Commission to report on diversity is a necessary step to ensure the public can see how the voices of historically marginalized communities are reflected in the media marketplace.”
