Luján Statement on Continuing Resolution to Keep the Government Open
Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Ben Ray Luján (D-N.M.) issued the following statement after voting to pass a Continuing Resolution to keep the federal government open and avert a catastrophic shutdown:
“Today, the Senate came together across party lines to keep the government open and avoid a shutdown that would throw the lives of millions of Americans into chaos. This Continuing Resolution excludes extreme cuts to critical programs and passed the House with overwhelming Democratic support.
“While House Republicans’ chaos and dysfunction led to a standstill in the House for weeks, Senators passed bipartisan, common-sense appropriations bills through regular order. Congress should continue working together to meet the needs of the American people without injecting partisan politics in the process. It is my hope that the Senate will continue advancing these bills to avoid legislating from one shutdown threat to another.
“This Continuing Resolution, however, does not address the urgent global security needs that we face. I will continue pushing to provide aid to Israel to defend itself against terrorism, humanitarian assistance for civilians in Gaza, and support for Ukraine to win the war against Putin’s aggression. Supporting our allies is an investment in global security and Congress must send a clear message to our adversaries that American leadership remains strong.”
