Luján Statement on the Senate Passage of Bipartisan Safer Communities Act

Washington D.C. – U.S. Senator Ben Ray Luján (D-N.M.) issued the following statement after the Senate passage of the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act – the most significant gun safety legislation to pass Congress in nearly three decades:

“From Uvalde to Buffalo – and too many communities in between – gun violence has shattered lives. For too long, Republicans in Congress failed to come to the table to respond to the gun violence epidemic. But today, that has finally changed with the passage of the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act. This bill honors the memories of gun violence victims with real, meaningful action. I was proud to vote for this legislation – a common-sense and lifesaving bill that will address various causes of gun violence. While it may not be perfect, this legislation is a step in the right direction and will save lives.

“No family should have to reckon with the pain of losing a loved one to gun violence. I’m hopeful that this legislation will quickly pass the House and be sent to President Biden’s desk. I will continue to work to protect our communities, keep our schools safe, and reduce gun violence across America.”
