Luján Votes to Confirm Xavier Becerra as HHS Secretary

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Ben Ray Luján (D-N.M.) today voted to confirm California Attorney General Xavier Becerra as the next Secretary of Health and Human Services.

“America’s COVID-19 response is at an inflection point, and while we now have a key tool in vaccines to defeat the virus, success is not guaranteed. The Department of Health and Human Services needs a strong, experienced leader at its helm to continue to mount a robust response to the pandemic, expand access to quality, affordable health care, and address longstanding health disparities that left some communities more vulnerable to severe illness and death from COVID-19. Having served in the House of Representatives with Xavier Becerra, I know that he has the commitment and vision to lead this Department of more than 80,000 employees and leverage its full power to take on the public health crisis. With today’s confirmation, the American people have gained a true health care champion, and I look forward to working with him to combat COVID-19 and improve health care for all.”
